Don’t you dare forget about Hurricane Katrina.
This August it will have been 10 years.Don’t forget how every level of the government deliberately failed the black people of New Orleans.
And how after mass displacement, the news and various cities where people were forced to evacuate referred to evacuees as “refugees” and frequently dehumanized them.
How the army core of engineers was warned about possible levee breaches but did nothing…
How they left us floating dead in the water and put in on TV.
How they called BLACK people seeking basic survival goods looters.
How the police in NOLA went on a duck hunt for Black folks once the water receded.
How the Bush family INSISTED that being in a refugee camp inside a football stadium was “better than what a lot of people were used to”
How FEMA delayed their response
How the city, state, and national governments set up roadblocks to Black folks reclaiming homes.
How more than half of the population (mostly, if not exclusively Black) of NOLA hasn’t ever returned.
How land and homes owned for more than a hundred years were taken right out from under families.Capitalism loves disaster, especially when it happens to “undesirable” populations
